Leaf Blowers or Leaf Vacuums - Which One Do You Need?

!: Leaf Blowers or Leaf Vacuums - Which One Do You Need?

To blow or not to blow? that is the question:

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The leaves and droppings of outrageous nature,

Or to take arms against a pile of sweepings,

And by vacuuming end them?

(with apologies to the Bard of Avon)

There is no doubt that the invention of the leaf blower has revolutionised the management of public parks and streets by increasing the productivity of workers in the horticultural sector.

No longer is cleaning of leaves, twigs, fruits, berries and other detritus left to a man with a broom: he (or she) can now round up the waste with a powerful blower ready for collection. Householders too have got onto the bandwagon and are now increasingly armed with a leaf blower to keep their leaf fall under control.

But as the leaf blower has become a permanent fixture, voices have been raised in criticism of machines that are permanently in 'blow' mode. What happens on a windy day? The pile of leaves gets redistributed in a never-ending battle between man and nature.

Others point to the destructive nature of the powerful wind that is created if it is applied indiscriminately near plants, and also there are health concerns about the potentially dangerous dust that is generated, particularly in dry climates.

Walk-behind mechanical leaf collectors, now largely museum pieces thanks to leaf blowers, always came with bag collectors for the leaves. Why should blowers not have this capability? The argument was that they need to be able to suck as well as blow.

Thus it was that 'Blower Vac' vacuum devices appeared, complete with gathering bags and impellors that cut to pieces and compact the debris into mulch to spread over flower beds or to start the composting process. You would be forgiven for thinking that it was 'game over' for dedicated blowing devices. Life however is rarely that simple.

The blowers are lighter, cheaper and simpler to operate. There is no need to stop and empty bags at regular intervals. Even with a typical 10:1 'mulching ratio' (i.e. the amount of leaves is reduced to a tenth of its original volume)an operator would be stopping frequently to empty a 35 to 45 litre mulch sack as is supplied with most handheld vacuum machines.

To cope with this issue there are professional vacuum machines that are wheeled and you either push them or they may have drive power. This gives you serious collection capability such as 200 litres in the case of the Warrior or a huge 282 litres in the Billy Goat machines. With this comes a weight that will be too much for most domestic users but may be attractive to those who are lucky enough to have a large place in the country.

Less bulky blower-vacs come with devices to make operation easier, such as a head with a roller that runs on the ground and makes collection easier on hard surfaces like patios, paths and drives. It also saves you from back pain. This feature is fitted on the open end of the telescopic nozzles of electric machines like the Flymo Scirocco 3000W, Draper 2200W and the Ryobi 2400W.

Another handy feature can be found on the Black & Decker 2600W. It has a scraper end that allows you to deal with wet leaves and ground-in soft material: this is normally the province of a dedicated leaf blower.

While at Ryobi, they have found a way to squeeze the mulch down by 15:1 instead of the near-universal 10:1, by means of clever blade design. This of course lessens your trips to the compost heap.

All vacuum blowers also allow you to spare delicate plants by avoiding the 'blow' setting when you are adjacent to them.

So is all this vacuum blower development sounding the death knell for simpler blowers? Judging by the number of machines of both types on offer, apparently not. The majority of machines in the petrol sector are blow-only devices, and this bears out the preference of the commercial market. There has been quite a lot of work done to lessen the controversial noise levels of leaf blowers in the street, which are now proscribed by law in certain US states. When you add a vacuum sucker and cutter blades you bring the noise back up again.

In the domestic market that largely favours electric machines, the machines are quieter and are less of a nuisance to neighbours: some will carry on keeping things simple with a blower, while others, and probably an increasing proportion, will go for the added versatility of a vacuum/ blower.

Once you have made your choice it only remains to say, in the immortal words from the Indianapolis 500 starter, 'Gentlemen and Ladies- start your engines' (but never after dusk, and give a thought to your neighbours)...

Most Needed Lawn Garden Tools

!: Most Needed Lawn Garden Tools

So you want a perfectly manicured lawn with clean edges, sharp hedges, colorful flowerbeds and maybe a few topiaries and water features thrown in? Anyone can have a beautiful lush landscape with a little artistic vision, a lot of work, and the right lawn garden tools.

While the major step of designing your landscape and deciding on the correct foliage and blooms for your area is incredibly important, it is also a very individualized and localized process that only you and your local nursery can accomplish. Sure, I could give you the general lists of the plants and trees that grow well in your area and I can suggest what colors and textures look great together. Ultimately it comes down to your personal tastes and the availability of plants and trees in your area. That is not the focus of this article.

The focus of this article is to adequately assess whether or not you have access to the proper lawn and garden tools and equipment that will properly perform the maintenance required of your masterpiece. Once you have access to all the proper equipment, keeping the neighbors green with envy is child's play.

A quick look in the requisite garden shed should yield the following items at a bare minimum:

- Traditional garden or soil rake which is mostly used in the soil

- Leaf rake or the fan shaped rake used mostly for cleaning up leaves and debris

- Long handle hoe used to break up the dirt and remove weeds

- Spade or round tipped shovel used to dig holes and trenches

- Pruning shears used to prune shrubs, trees and flowers

- Hedge clippers to trim hedges and shrubbery into the desired shapes

- Hand tool set which includes a trowel, weeder, and cultivator

- Wheelbarrow which is used to haul just about anything and save your back

- Lawn mower of which there are many types but I prefer one that mulches and has a bag so you have more choices

- Seeder which is not essential but is a time saver for over seeding the lawn or applying fertilizer over large areas

- Assortment of garden hoses and sprinklers with which to ensure proper watering

Once you have your arsenal of lawn and garden tools you are ready to trim, rake and mow your way to a landscape that not only turns heads but adds to the value of your home and the neighborhood in general. And most importantly, remember to have fun while you are landscaping your garden!

Electric Lawn Mowers

!: Electric Lawn Mowers

Electric lawn mowers are a lot more popular than you might think. Electric lawn mowers are great because they are light, efficient, and environmentally friendly.

"Does it come with someone who will do the mowing?" Not exactly, but that seems to be all that this Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 12 Amp 19-Inch Electric Mulching Mower with rear bag lacks. The reliable electric start motor will not allow make enough work for you to develop a coveted "six pack" abdomen either.

Environmentalists will love these electric lawn mowers with purring motor that is soothing rather than ear splitting like power lawn mowers of the past. One reviewer mentioned that he could hear the birds singing above the low sound from his electric lawn mower. The traditional spark plug is not present with this lawn mower and neither is the need to keep an eye on gas levels for refilling at the most inconvenient places.

To bag or not to bag, that is the question! Yes, you may choose to collect lawn clippings in the bag that is included with the electric lawn mowers or to let those clippings naturally mulch and fertilize your lawn. This is both good for the environment as well as your billfold since you won't need to purchase fertilizers that may be unhealthy for humans as well as pets.

Reviews are generally quite positive regarding these electric lawn mowers. One review did state the obvious which is to always make certain that the electric cord is kept out of the way of the cutting blades or the human mower may become a crispy critter.

In many ways, the Black & Decker LM175 18-Inch 6.5 Amp Electric Mower is similar to the MM875 above. It has a slightly less wide cutting path the option of bag or no bag. This electric mower is about 30 pounds lighter that the MM875 which many make it a bit easier for older children and smaller adults to handle with ease.

One reviewer returned to the electric cord and the need to be aware of its position during mowing. This gentleman mentioned beginning at the electrical outlet and carefully working his way away from that point of origin. His additional comment was that trees, bushes, shrubs and others may entangle the electric cord and recommended increased awareness of the power cord in those situations.

What will they think of next? A flip handle, can you imagine? Yes indeed, the flip handle electric mower reduces time and energy wasted in trying to turn the mower around to cut the next row of grass. This wonderful feature is found on the Black & Decker MM675 Lawn Hog 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Mulching Mower, Flip-Handle electric mower. This feature, like the reduced weight of the LM175 makes mowing easier for older children or smaller adults who might otherwise struggle with a heavier mower that needs to be manually turned.

One reviewer commented on the ease of height adjustment of the handle. He is over 6 ft. tall and states that he has never found an electric mower that adequately adjusts to his height. Over all, reviews have been positive for all three of the electric lawn mowers previewed here. The general comments seem to be reflected in the old saying, "try one, you'll like it."

delineate of the 2010 Craftsman 190cc 22'' Briggs & Stratton Rear Bag Front Propelled Lawn Mower

In May 2010 I decided to purchase a new self propelled lawn mower for use at my home and decided to stick with a brand I've known and used for many years, Sears Craftsman. After some study online and speaking with the Sears rep at the store I decided to purchase the Craftsman 190cc 22'' Briggs & Stratton Rear Bag Front Propelled Lawn Mower and I believe I made a great choice.

The Craftsman 190cc 22'' Briggs & Stratton Rear Bag Front Propelled Lawn Mower was easy to assemble as it was about 90% together right out of the box. It took maybe 15-minutes to assemble the handle, add the oil (which was included) and fill the gas tank and before I knew it the mower was ready to go. I was very impressed with the ability of the mower as everything appeared to be well made which is why I chose to go with a Sears Craftsman again. I've owned two other self propelled lawn mowers from Craftsman in the past and this mower is definitely in a class of it's own. Here are some of the features that I think make this Craftsman mower a good buy:

Lawn Mower Bags

1. Easy to start - This single Craftsman mower comes with a 190cc Briggs & Stratton machine that is determined the Platinum machine in their line. The Sears rep basically said the discrepancy in the middle of this 675 Platinum machine and their Gold engines are the spark plugs that come with it that deliver a surefire spark each time. The 675 Platinum machine also has a starting promise which states that Sears guarantees the machine will start within 2-pulls every single time. From my experience I've never (so far) had to pull more than once to start this mower and right out of the box it fired up on the first pull too.

delineate of the 2010 Craftsman 190cc 22'' Briggs & Stratton Rear Bag Front Propelled Lawn Mower

2. Height Adjustment is made easier - On my old Craftsman mower it was much harder to adjust the mowing height as the wheel adjustments were sometimes hard to see and you were never 100% sure you had each wheel at the same height. On this new Craftsman 190cc 22'' Briggs & Stratton Rear Bag Front Propelled Lawn Mower each wheel has an easy to use pull handle with numbered slots. So I can adjust (for example) every wheel to be at a #6 height and the handle fits snugly into each slot so I know all of them are the same. Much easier than the past Craftsman mower I had last season.

3. Front Wheel Self Propelled - My yard is basically flat except for the front yard which slopes down and I've found the front wheel self propelled mower to be exquisite on this type of terrain. This single model has a long bar on the handle to engage the front wheels and I find that it's easy to operate the speed of the wheels and it pulls the mower nicely through my yard. If I had a yard that had more hills and uneven ground I may have chosen the rear wheel self propelled but I think most yards will do well with this front wheel drive version.

4. Price and Terms - For under 0, the price was exquisite for such a well made mower. I did have the selection to spend an extra -40 and bump up to a Key Start (which is an galvanic start mower) but Craftsman only had rear wheel drive versions which I was not concerned in. Plus Sears has been running a great promotion this Spring where if you purchase anything over 9 on your Sears card you can finance it interest free over 12-months. It was a no brainer to finance it and pay it off over time interest free so we definitely took advantage of that promotion. Any way if you select not to use the 12-month interest free promotion you can also receive a rebate online for 5% back so make sure you look into that on the Sears website.

All in all I think the Craftsman 190cc 22'' Briggs & Stratton Rear Bag Front Propelled Lawn Mower was a great purchase. It's a great machine, cuts our lawn evenly and efficiently and is a joy to use. Now if they could just comprise man to for real cut my lawn for me I'll be in heaven!
